One Cheer for Representationalism?†

چکیده

When Dewey declared in  that pragmatism would ‘give the coup de grace to representationalism ’, he had (to say the least) underestimated the tenacity of the intended victim. Even as he wrote, Russell was at work on the waggons which were to carry so much of philosophy into new lands—regions where Frege’s referentialism was part of the bedrock (or so it seemed). A century later, despite renewed resistance by such giants as Wittgenstein and Richard Rorty himself, representationalism seems to many to be not only alive but unassailable—part of the constitution of the analytic republic, and almost too obvious to challenge. †For R. Representationalism and Husserlian Phenomenology

According to contemporary representationalism, phenomenal qualia—of specifically sensory experiences—supervene on representational content. This paper is an argument to the effect that a certain view about mental representing, together with some very liberal constraints on the brain as a dynamic system, entails that the organism will tend to form adaptive mental representations of its environment. To show this, it will first be argued that although mental representing is a common thing indeed, representationalism, in the most impor...

Self-representationalism and phenomenology

To a first approximation, self-representationalism is the view that a mental state M is phenomenally conscious just in case M represents itself in the appropriate way. Proponents of self-representationalism seem to think that the phenomenology of ordinary conscious experience is on their side, but opponents seem to think the opposite. In this paper, I consider the phenomenological merits and de...

Colour Constancy and Russellian Representationalism

Representationalism, the view that phenomenal character supervenes on intentional content, has attracted a wide following in recent years. Representationalism can take various forms.
